Employee Spotlight – David Borovatz

David BorovatzHave you met our Senior Account Executive, David Borovatz? Whether or not you’ve had that pleasure, here’s a chance to learn about more about him!

What’s the quick overview of David – professional & personal?

I’ve been in staffing for 14 years, and at Morton for almost 10. I started off as a recruiter 14 years ago, and I’ve done everything from recruiting, account management, sales, management of internal teams of recruiters, and sales. Now, I’m doing what I love most and that’s working with our customers.

I’m from Richmond, mostly — been here since I was 3. I’m a Hokie, so that’s the only time I’ve really spent away from Richmond. I’m also happily married with 2 kids.

Since you’re a tried and true Richmonder, you must have some good insights into good local spots. Where is your favorite place to eat in RVA, and what dish do you order?

My favorite restaurant in Richmond is Joe’s Inn down in the Fan.  My favorite dish by far is the Spaghetti a la Greek with a Mini Greek Salad. My favorite restaurant of all time is Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood in Myrtle Beach, SC where my family and I can eat crab legs for hours.

What keeps you coming back each day to Morton? What are you most proud of?

I just really love what I do. I have a business/IT degree from Virginia Tech, and while I never was in technology as a developer or network engineer, I really enjoy the exposure that I get in this role to the full spectrum of IT. Cool projects, cool technologies, overcoming the problems and challenges — I like the variety.

I also like the flexibility I’ve had working at Morton and especially working with Mark in an environment where we’re focused on doing the right thing — it means a lot to me.

Do you think there are any misconceptions about hiring a staffing firm to help with employment needs?

I think the biggest misconception is that we’re headhunters or a body shop and it’s just not that way at all. We really try to focus on serving the client, from the direct hiring manager to HR departments, and also serving the people that work for us, our consultants.

What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming location move?

I think it’s a great recruiting tool for attracting talent for our internal teams — having a much larger office space in up-and-coming Scott’s Addition. It’s also a great opportunity for customer events, client events, information sessions, celebrations — it’s a cool location and space for that. I’m looking forward to the potential of hosting meetups and technology talks or CIO panels and generally having more people come into our location .

What would you consider a highlight of your past year, whether it’s personal or professional?

A personal highlight — Purchased a 1984 Jeep CJ7, checking an item off my bucket list.

A professional highlight — Ranking 4.5/5.0 in performance on one of my larger accounts where we compete against firms that are vastly larger than Morton.

In your nearly 14 year tenure, what are some of the changes you’ve seen to Richmond’s, or the nation’s, recruiting landscape?

I think the biggest change over the years is that the ability to find candidates has become much more difficult. The supply of qualified candidates is much lower than it was 10 years ago, mainly because the demand for these resources has just skyrocketed.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you could give to an employer looking to find the best talent for their position?

Clearly defined requirements, clearly defined expectations, and clearly defined outcomes. When we can have a view into the future, it helps us find the exact right person to fill the needs of the organization. The more specific, the better.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you could give to a job seeker who might be thinking about using a recruiter?

Transparency is huge. We want to have as much info about the candidate as possible, from their skills, qualifications, career perspective, to knowing where else they’re interviewing and what we’re up against. Keeping us in the loop and communicating is huge, but it goes both ways; I strive to communicate with each candidate as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Failing and learning from the failure is helpful — if you don’t put yourself out there, it’s hard to get into the right opportunity.

I also think, as a candidate, you have to be ready. If you’re not ready to hop in the car and get a meeting or an interview, it could be a challenge for everyone involved with finding you the right job. You need to be ready to make scheduling adjustments and get in the meeting quickly. Time kills all deals.

What’s your most memorable vacation highlight of the recent past?

I went to Aruba for my 10th anniversary back in the summer of 2017.  This was our second trip to Aruba and it was neat seeing the progress / changes over a 10-year period, but made even better by having a Jeep for the week, which allowed us to explore the island on our own.

My wife, kids, and I will be spending a week this summer in and around Las Vegas, exploring the Grand Canyon, Red Rock National Park, and the Hoover Dam which we are all super excited about.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My late Grandfather was a huge influence on my life growing up and even as a young adult — tremendous example of faith, love, and family.  I was honored to have my Grandfather live down the street while I was in college. He was always available to support his family.

Also my Trio of Fathers – my Father, my Step-Father, and my Father-in-Law.  I’m blessed to have such a support structure that covers almost all facets of life to include faith, love, family, fatherhood, marriage, business, friendship, leadership, success, etc.

David has continued to be an essential part of the Morton team and he’s an all-around great guy!
