Four Basics for Quality Project Management

I’m a big fan of “getting back to basics” when it comes to project management. It’s easy to get caught up in the specifics of your company’s process and the details of juggling projects and people, but it all comes down to the foundation of how you manage.

Josh at Project Management Student writes from the perspective of the new and aspiring project manager – and as such he writes about the basics. If you ask me, reading about good basic practices is something any project manager should do.

These are Josh’s “4 Secret Weapons in the Battle for Your Project Management Career.” They are a great set of basics that are a good reminder for anyone.

The first tip is to describe the end state. You have to know where you’re going in order to get there. While breaking a project down to intermediate goals is important, never forget the big picture and what the end result should be.

Next, utilize constant, sustainable action. You can’t do everything in one sitting, but you’ll never get anywhere spending all your time organizing, divvying, meeting, and discussing amongst your team. Make sure proper time is set aside to definitively get work done in order to continue moving towards the end goal.

The third tip has been hinted at so far; limit work in progress. You and your team can only handle so much workload at once. Multitasking is a skill we use a lot these days, but don’t forget that taking on too much will only slow everything down.

Finally, seek inspiration. This means both keeping connected to the wealth of information and support available on the web and through other means, but making sure you’re keeping yourself and your team motivated. Inspiration can be infectious, and if you’re charged up to take on a project, so too can be your entire team.
